Laser Hair Removal Chicago

Laser hair removal is the most effective method of eliminating unwanted hair. It is a non-invasive procedure that works by targeting melanin, or pigmented hair, in the hair follicle. Lasers have different wavelengths, but all work when melanin is preferentially heated to significant temperatures to destroy certain structures in the hair follicle without damaging surrounding tissues. These structures beneath the skin surface need to be significantly damaged in order to prevent new hair formation.

Laser hair removal requires a series of treatments that are based on several factors. First, hair cells grow in cycles and can only be treated in their growth phase. Depending on the body area, an average of 30% of the hair cells may be in the growth phase at any time. Hairs are either coarse or fine, and follicles may be found at different depths and densities. Because of all these characteristics, our physician can use different lasers and settings to achieve your goal and to individualize treatment.

We utilize the GentleLase Plus alexandrite laser and the Nd:Yag CoolGlide laser. These lasers are cleared by the FDA. We are able to treat all skin types, tanned people, as well as virtually all areas of the body.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does laser treatment feel like?
A pulse of laser light feels like a small pinch or slight sting similar to the snap of a rubberband against skin. No local anesthesia is required and the procedure is well tolerated. For people with very sensitive skin, a prescription topical anesthetic can be provided.

Can all hair be treated?
Virtually all areas of the body can be treated if the hair has at least some pigment in it. Even blondes and most redheads have some hair pigment.

What are the possible side effects?
Side effects are uncommon. Redness and/or mild swelling at the treatment site may occur, though this is typically gone within a few hours.

How many treatments are required?
Depending on the individual characteristics of your hair and the body area, generally 3-5 treatments are required.

Are there some people who should not get treatment?
There are certain medical conditions and medications that preclude patients from laser treatment. Certain medications can cause increased photosensitivity and may cause burns if not properly recognized. Our physician will review your medical history prior to treatment. It is imperative to have a licensed physician perform all laser procedures for safety reasons.

All procedures are performed by a board certified physician.
