Science of Laser Hair Removal

Safety

According to the Center for Devices and Radiological Health, hair removal lasers are Class IV medical devices.  They must be operated in compliance with the American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers in Healthcare Facilities (ANSI Z-136.3) and the American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers (ANSI Z136.1). Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) use these standards for inspections and audits.

During a laser treatment, precautions must be taken to protect both the patient and the operator.  Accidental exposure to skin or eyes is very dangerous and has the potential to cause permanent damage, both with direct and indirect reflected laser light.  For this reason, the patient and operator must wear protective eyewear specific to the laser.  The treatment room door should remain closed at all times during a treatment, and the appropriate warning signs should be posted on the premises.  Laser light can be reflected off metallic surfaces, and even pass through windows and glass.  It is important to remove reflective materials, such as mirrors, from the room and keep any windows completely covered with dense material.

Fire and electrical hazards also exist.  The exterior housing of a laser should never be removed, except by an authorized service representative.  Fatal shock can occur from the extremely high voltages.  The high voltage components can retain charge even after the laser has been turned off.  Oxygen and flammable substances, alcohol, acetone, and flammable anesthetics should not be used.

Safety is our primary concern at Cosmetic Laser Solutions.   Dr. Goldboss will guide you through our safety procedures.
